Latest news: Appeal filed for convicted Sweetwater soldier [pdf], Tommy Millsaps, Monroe County Advocate, August 28, 2008. Summary: Four United States Army personnel were charged on June 21, 2006 with premeditated murder, attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder and making a false official statement in connection of the accused execution of three male detainees in Iraq on May 9, 2006. On March 17, 2007, Staff Sgt. Raymond Girouard was found not guilty of premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit murder, and was found guilty of three counts of negligent homicide, conspiracy to obstruct justice, obstruction of justice and violation of a general order. He is currently serving a 10-year sentence at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. On January 25, 2007, Pfc. Corey R. Clagett pleaded guilty to killing two unarmed Iraqis and to trying to kill a third unarmed man detained in the raid, and to conspiracy and obstruction of justice. He is currently serving an 18-year sentence, and is eligible for parole in five and a half years. On January 11, 2007, Specialist William B. Hunsaker pleaded guilty to murder charges and received an 18-year prison sentence, and is eligible for parole in five and a half years. On January 4, 2007, Specialist Juston R. Graber made a plea deal. His charge was educed to a "mercy killing" in exchange for testimony against his squadmates. Graber was reduced in rank and is still in the Army.
